Vessel / Threshold, 2025
Oil, acrylic and purple "gold leaf" on canvas
36" x 36"
Vessel / Threshold is a self portrait of the artist about a near fatal surgery in which a vein was cut open during the removal of an ovarian cyst, thereby causing her to almost bleed to death. The injury to her vein has also made it prohibitively dangerous for her to have children; and this piece contemplates what it means to be a vessel that is a carrier of ideas and creativity, but that cannot carry or create human life itself. The two snakes intertwined around the staff and dove wings make up a caduceus and the composition was inspired by medieval architecture. The word "threshold" is a double reference to the threshold between life and death and the threshold that one crosses in marriage, except in this case the artist decided to mentally "marry" herself.
