20/20 Visionaries
20/20 Visionaries is a series of twenty paintings that pay tribute to twenty 20th century female artists. Each painting features a solid colored circle against a background that aesthetically employs the hallmark attributes of each female artist in the series. The circles make reference to Judy Chicago’s renown artwork The Dinner Party, which includes a circular dinner plate for each guest at the dinner party table.
In the center of each circle in 20/20 Visionaries lies a reimagined 19th century scientific illustration. These drawings of sea creatures and simple organisms were chosen for their resemblance to parts of the female anatomy and the art historical association that has often been drawn or intentionally implied between the imagery of female artists and parts of the female body - most notably imagery resembling female genitalia.
The female artists in 20/20 Visionaries will most likely include: 1. Judy Chicago, 2. Yayoi Kusama, 3. Beatriz Milhazes, 4. Ruth Asawa, 5. Niki de Saint Phalle, 6. Georgia O’Keeffe, 7. Lee Bontecou, 8. Hilma af Klint, 9. Helen Frankenthaler, 10. Sonia Delaunay, 11. Howardena Pindell, 12. Julie Mehretu, 13. Judy Pfaff, 14. Bridget Riley, 15. Joan Mitchell, 16. Vija Clemens, 17. Lee Krasner, 18. Agnes Martin, 19. Louise Nevelson, and 20. Anni Albers.
I would love to show this series at a small museum. If you work at a small museum, let's connect!
