AN APPLE A DAY
An Apple A Day is series of oil and acrylic paintings on canvas and digital print studies about health, wellness, and the immune system. Some of the ideas explored within this series include: the way that both internal and external factors affect individual immunity and health; the relationship between emotional and physical fitness; the prominence of the snake and apple in American health adage and symbolism, which are both associated with original sin in the Bible; the way past generations affect bodies in the present via our DNA; the possibility of reincarnation; and the spiritual side of health and wellbeing that we do not yet fully understand from a scientific perspective. The artist has lived with an auto-immune disease herself and is thus constantly thinking about the many interrelated factors that affect human health and wellness.

This piece contemplates what it means to be a vessel that is a carrier of ideas and creativity, but that will not create human life itself. The two snakes intertwined around the staff and dove wings make up a caduceus and the composition was inspired by medieval architecture. The word "threshold" is a double reference to the threshold between life and death and the threshold that one crosses in marriage.

This work is about how internal and external factors affect the immune system. The main image is a bi-colored iris that alludes to HIlma af Klint's painting "The Swan (No. 1)." Instead of making it an even split bi-coloration, here the "bottom" (an inverted iris top) of the flower penetrates the "top" (an inverted iris bottom).

This work is about the way that DNA connects us to past generations and their life experiences on earth and possibly beyond. The twisted cat's cradle yarn is a reference to the double helix that DNA is comprised of. The tree shape is created by the cat's cradle is another reference to one's "family tree." Family dynamics, family history, and genetics can furthermore have a profound affect on our individual health and wellness and thereby on our collective experience as a species here on earth.

Double Dragon finger-trap considers what self-determination is in the context of genetics and inborn traits such as one's unique fingerprint. Is nature more powerful, or is nurture and self-nurture? What remains unchanged and what transforms over the course of a person's lifetime?
